Is Passover a day of Unleavened Bread?

Leviticus 23:5-6 says Passover should be kept on the 14th of the first month and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days starting on the 15th of the first month.

Lev 23:5  On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD’s Passover.
Lev 23:6  And on the fifteenth day of the same month
is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread.

It is natural to ask if Passover day (the 14th) is a day of Unleavened Bread or not.  The answer to this question is found in the gospel accounts.  Here are the relevant Scriptures.

Mat 26:17  Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

Mar 14:12  Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”

Luk 22:7  Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be killed.

Note that the words “day of the Feast” in Matthew 26:17 have been added and do not appear in the original Greek text.  Adding them does not make sense as the Passover is the day before the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

The phrase “Unleavened Bread” is translated from the one Greek word azumos which means unleavened.  In each of these three verses azumos is in the plural form, so “Unleaveneds” is the correct literal translation.

In these verses, Passover day (the 14th) is referred to as a day of Unleavened Bread.  This makes sense as God instructed ancient Israel to eat the Passover with unleavened bread.

Exo 12:8  Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Thus, we have our answer.  Passover day (the 14th of the first month) is a day of Unleavened Bread.  So there are eight days of Unleavened Bread, but the feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread are separate.  Passover day (which is a day of Unleavened Bread) is directly followed by the feast of Unleavened Bread (which lasts seven days).  This is similar to the Feast of Tabernacles (that lasts seven days) which is directly followed by the eighth day.  The two are separate Feasts but next to each other.

Conclusion

Passover day is a day of Unleavened Bread.
