Generally speaking, we didn’t choose our own name, our parents did.  For many parents, when they choose the name for their child, the most important consideration is the sound of the name, and the meaning of the name gets little thought.

However, with God, names are very important.  A name is descriptive of what it names.  A name reveals an attribute or characteristic.  God’s names are very important.  They reveal who He is, His character.

With this in mind we will take a look at some of the names of God.

Hebrew Names

El – God (Strong One)

Gen 16:13  Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God [El] -Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”

Elohiym – God (Strong One or Ones)

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth.

Eloahh – God

Yehovah – LORD (Eternal, Self-Existent)

Yehovah Tsebaah – The LORD of hosts

1Sa 1:3  This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts [Yehovah Tsebaah] in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

Yehovah Tsedeq – The LORD our Righteousness

Yehovah Elyon – The LORD Most High
