Would God ever allow a true Christian to starve to death?
Jesus said that leading up to His return there will be wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.
Mat 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.
There is every likelihood that some of God’s people will be living in famine afflicted areas when this prophecy is fulfilled. Would God allow any of His true servants, those who obey Him, to starve to death?
Let’s look at what the Scriptures say.
God commands us not to worry about food, drink, and clothing – the necessities of life.
Mat 6:25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Mat 6:26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Mat 6:27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
Mat 6:28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
Mat 6:29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Mat 6:30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Mat 6:31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Mat 6:32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
God knows we need food and clothing. Jesus assures us that God will feed and clothe us if we seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Since God’s true servants seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness, we have the answer to our question. God will not let His true servants starve to death. He will provide food and clothing for them.
Are there any other Scriptures which say the same thing? Yes!
Psa 34:10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
Psa 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.
Psa 111:4 He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; The LORD is gracious and full of compassion.
Psa 111:5 He has given food to those who fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His covenant.
Pro 10:3 The LORD will not allow the righteous soul to famish, But He casts away the desire of the wicked.
Pro 13:25 The righteous eats to the satisfying of his soul, But the stomach of the wicked shall be in want.
Are there examples of God miraculously providing food to avert starvation? Yes.
Example 1 – Manna from heaven
God provided ancient Israel with manna from heaven for forty years.
Exo 16:35 And the children of Israel ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.
Example 2 – Elijah and the ravens
God provided food for Elijah by ravens who brought bread and meat to him.
1Ki 17:6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.
Example 3 – Elijah and the widow of Zarephath
God provided food for Elijah, a widow, and her son for many days until it rained.
1Ki 17:14 For thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.’ “
1Ki 17:15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days.
1Ki 17:16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah.
We have covered some wonderful promises and examples. But they need to be balanced by another perspective. We know that God sometimes allows His servants to be killed. For example, both John the Baptist and James the brother of John were killed by Herod; and Stephen was stoned to death. Furthermore, Jesus followed His statement about famines with a warning His servants will be killed.
Mat 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Mat 24:9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
A similar warning is found in John.
Joh 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. …
And let’s not forget what the apostle Paul went through.
2Co 11:24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.
2Co 11:25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;
2Co 11:26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
2Co 11:27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—
2Co 11:28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.
The apostle Paul suffered greatly; he was persecuted. However, he did not starve to death, even though at times he experienced hunger.
Conclusion
In considering all these Scriptures we have covered we can make the following conclusion.
God would never allow a true Christian to starve to death. There are promises and examples to back this up. A true Christian may suffer hunger, but God won’t let him starve to death. He may be persecuted; he may even be martyred; but he will never starve to death.
